As a teacher, we’re sure you know that there are lots of books your students should read.

Many people often worry that bringing iPads to the classroom might stop students from enjoying classic tales like Matilda and Wind in the Willows. However, this is not true!

These devices actually encourage reading through learning apps, e-readers and a host of special features designed to make reading easier and more accessible. These include:

  • Text-to-speech
  • Colour correction/adjustment
  • Zoom function
  • Download for offline reading
  • In-built dictionary and thesaurus

iPads also give students a forum to discuss these books – you could even make this part of their homework!

We believe that reading in the classroom of the future will rely heavily on iPads. Here’s a list of our favourite books your students should read using this new technology. Who knows what they’ll discover?

9 books your students should read

Age group: 5–8:

  1. Winnie the Pooh, A.A Milne

Follow the adventures of Winnie, Christopher Robin and their friends in Hundred Acre Wood. They’ll hunt for honey, play pooh-sticks and provide a great introduction to reading for younger students.

  1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl

No child can resist the tantalising tale of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Explore the different areas within and learn some moral lessons along the way. This is one of the books your students should read because it will capture their imaginations and the overall story is just excellent!

  1. Charlotte’s Web, E.B White

Fern loves playing with Wilbur, her little pig. However, something magical happens when he encounters the usual fate of nice, fat, little piggies … enter Charlotte! This is one of the best books your students should read as it’s a little more grown-up and teaches them the value of friendship.

Age group: 9–12:

  1. The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien

Embark on an adventure with Bilbo and the dwarves to reclaim their lost city from Smaug the dragon. This book can be challenging for some readers, but it’s a great introduction to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S Lewis

Explore the snow-covered land of Narnia with Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. Will they defeat the White Witch? This is a great series for your students to get their teeth into, and is certainly worth reading before watching the film!

  1. The Famous Five: Five on Treasure Island, Enid Blyton

Take your students back to a time before mobile phones, and explore Treasure Island. This is a great introduction to the detective genre and Timmy the dog is one of our favourite characters ever!

Age group: young adults

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

This is a highly controversial story, but is definitely one of the books your students should read. Atticus Finch defends a black man accused of raping a white woman, the story teaches students about racial tensions and the Great Depression. A fantastic tie-in to your History curriculum.

  1. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon

Delve into an investigation of a (dog’s) murder, carried out by a young boy with autism. He explores everyday life with a unique outsider’s perspective and is a great character for your students to try to understand.

  1. A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning, Lemony Snicket

The first tale in the story of the Baudelaire children. Their uncle, Count Olaf, schemes to steal their inheritance – hopefully they can overcome him! A twisted tale full of surprises and compassion, it’s a great read for your students!

So that’s it, a quick round-up of the books your students should read. Use iPads to gain quick and easy access to these classics and open up a new world of possibilities.
