Exams are just around the corner, so it’s about time you thought about using iPads for GCSE revision.

These top-notch learning devices have plenty of features and apps that can help your students learn and retain information. Another bonus is that they present revision in a fun and engaging way!

Here, we’ll take a look at the benefits of using iPads for GCSE revision and give you some top tips on how to do so.

Are iPads good for exam revision?

The first GCSEs take place in May, so schools all around the country are encouraging their students to start revising.

Revision is especially important this year, as more subjects are using the new 1-9 grades instead of ABCs. This makes it much harder to get top marks, so your students need to prepare more than in previous years.

School iPads can work well throughout the year, but they really come into their own in exam season.

They have apps dedicated to helping students pass their exams, their portable nature means your students can revise anywhere, and the real-time progress tracking enables students to identify areas for improvement before exam day.

Another advantage to using iPads for revision is that students can revise in a way they’re used to – consuming content via an interactive screen!

This makes students feel much more comfortable than using a textbook and it means they’re more likely to make an effort with their revision because it’s accessible and engaging.

4 ways to use iPads for GCSE revision

As a teacher, it’s your job to instruct your students on how to use iPads for GCSE revision. Some might have the initiative to find out on their own, but others might need a little push.

Here’s a cheat sheet to help you out:

1. Show them the right revision apps

There are hundreds of revision apps out there. However, some are more reliable than others!

The ones you choose should have some sort of accreditation to prove their validity, but it’s still worth going through the app yourself to make sure all the information is correct.

The apps you go for will depend on the subjects you teach, but here are a few of our favourites:

  • Revision App – Suitably named, students tailor the app to their study level and subjects then it helps them create revision cards featuring video, text and audio. They can even send it to friends for study groups!
  • iMindMap – Many students prefer to use mind maps to revise and this app is great! Sketch your own revision diagrams and even record audio notes to help your students.
  • Gojimo – Mostly free content used for GCSE, A Level, Common Entrance and more! Your students select their subject and exam board, then complete the relevant quizzes! The app will tell them why they got a question wrong, so it’s a great tool for learning.

2. Try using productivity apps too

It’s not enough just to do a few pop quizzes. Your students need a structured approach to revision. Luckily, the Apple Store can help with that too:

  • Get Revising – Students can create a nifty, colour-coded revision timetable using this handy tool.
  • Exam Countdown – You don’t want anyone to forget an exam or fail to get enough revision under their belt. Using this app, students can store all their key dates in one place.

Students can sync both these apps to their Google Calendars to make sure they don’t miss out!

3. Suggest a wireless keyboard

There’s only so much you can do with a touchscreen. For practice essay questions and note-taking, a wireless keyboard is probably best.

Some iPad cases have these keyboards built in, but they’re available separately too. Not all students will be able to afford them, so try getting a couple for your school.

4. Emphasise the great learning features

Chances are your students use iPads every day. However, they might be unaware of their built-in learning features because they’re too busy gaming or using Instagram and Facebook.

Show your students how portability, cameras, screen view and other features can help them learn, so they can make the most of their devices.

Hopefully, this will help your students use their iPads for GCSE revision and get the best grades they possibly can. Use school iPads to try to make revision fun where possible – otherwise, the exam season may be a stressful time for students!
