Summer is here and boy, it’s been a scorcher. However, that means your school freezers will have been working overtime for the last few weeks of term, and still might be trying to keep your school cool in the holidays.

Here we’ll take a look at what you should do with your school freezers over the summer, and offer some top tech tips to help you chill out and enjoy the sunshine.

What should you do with your school freezers over the summer holidays?

Turn it off

If your school’s not in use over the summer, the best thing for you to do is turn your freezers (and other cooking equipment) off.

This way you can avoid cranking up your energy bills over the holiday. You can also prevent any breakdowns – a really good thing as you probably wouldn’t notice something was wrong until September 1st when you have lots of hungry children clamouring for lunch.

Don’t forget to keep the door open once you’ve turned it off, otherwise it might start to smell.

Keep it on, but don’t really use it

If you’re worried about turning you freezers off for the summer, keep them on, but make sure someone comes in to check them every month or so.

We’d suggest that you part empty it, leaving the food that will keep for the summer holidays. These include fruit, veg and some meats. But, check the label before you freeze it as some foods won’t be suitable.

Once you’ve done that, turn up the freezers’ thermostat slightly. Just enough to keep things cool and (hopefully) avoid build up of extra frost.

Use it normally

Some schools open their doors during the summer. They host events, summer schools, workshops, and sometimes the teachers come in to prepare for the coming academic year so the canteen is always open.

As long as you make sure you defrost it regularly and keep an eye on the food itself, you should be fine.

Top tech to keep your freezers cool

Whether you turn your freezer on or off this summer, there are some great gadgets that can keep your freezer cool. They work especially well if you have a fridge-freezer combo. Here are our favourites:

  • Defrost technology – Keeps your freezer at the optimum temperature and humidity to prevent build up of frost while keeping your food fresh. Great as you won’t need to defrost your freezers manually.
  • Freezer guard technology – This one’s more for the winter, but if the temperature drops below zero degrees, your freezer will still work perfectly.

If your school freezer doesn’t have this technology, it might be worth looking at getting a new one. There are plenty of options out there, so have a good think about what your school needs and why.

Good breakdown cover and energy efficiency are a must as they’ll help your school out in the long run.
