With BETT 2020 now behind us, it’s time to focus on which fresh trends are emerging within the EdTech world. Fast-changing technology doesn’t just create more resources; it also pushes educational boundaries, providing a fantastic range of new methods for students to engage with the curriculum.

In this article, we’ll discuss the new directions that EdTech is taking and look at how schools might make optimal use of this technology.

1) Accessibility and student-centred learning

One of the magical features of EdTech is its accessibility. With so many premium resources online, as well as unprecedented numbers of students having access to laptops, iPads and smart phones, learning has never been more accessible.

Not only can students access content that’s specifically tailored to their needs; they can also work through material at their own pace. In addition, there’s considerable scope for students to work remotely. This offers excellent opportunities for off-site study or flipped learning, for example.

2) Innovative teaching materials

The advance of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) has transformed the learning experiences that students can enjoy. When paired with videos (which can now be easily integrated with other materials), it’s possible to create a high degree of realism, creating virtual environments and experiences which would be difficult to replicate in real life.

From better illustration of complex concepts through to reproducing the classroom environment online, the possibilities are almost endless. Interactive screens are also likely to play an even bigger role in the classroom, adding variety and value to lessons.

3) Internet of Things (IoT)

The IoT refers to everything that’s connected to the web that can be programmed to function without direct human intervention. A simple example is a Bluetooth thermostat: once set, the thermostat will regulate temperature automatically, with no human involvement.

This concept is now being used to create increasingly sophisticated environments. From dark factory manufacturing where the workforce consists of robots, for example, through to care of the elderly, the IoT is quietly transforming how we live.

Applied to education, the IoT therefore provides plenty of opportunities for tech-centric learning. From remotely monitoring a science experiment through to changing digital displays, it’s likely that IoT technology will play an increasing role in 21st-century learning environments.

4) The changing role of the teacher

One of the most exciting consequences of new tech is its capacity to absorb the more onerous aspects of teaching. There are opportunities to assign and mark work automatically, update teaching materials and simplify administrative processes. These developments could create a welcome reduction in the burden teaching staff currently face.

So, these are the trends that we predict will make the most impact throughout 2020. But what will make the biggest splash in your school?
