To date, we’ve focused on upgrading to LED lighting in classrooms and the benefits schools would receive by doing so, but another area which we are sure thousands of schools nationwide could benefit from upgrading their lighting in, is their Sports Hall…

Unlike most areas in a school where bulbs can be easily reached by a member of the site team, lighting in a Sports Hall is of course much higher and therefore the bulbs aren’t very accessible. In fact, most Sports Hall lighting can only be reached with scaffolding in place; yet this can cost hundreds of pounds at a time for schools to hire, which is understandably a considerable amount of money for a school to pay out. Consequently, many schools may wait until multiple bulbs have failed in their Sports Hall so that it’s more cost effective when hiring scaffolding for the replacement to take place. Whilst this may seem like a logical option, as more bulbs fail, the quality of light in your Sports Hall continues to deteriorate. Students are left to suffer poor lighting during lessons and after school activities; whilst many schools rent out their sports facilities to the local community in order to provide much needed extra revenue for the school. However, with poor light quality your Sports Hall is likely to be far less attractive to potential users, ultimately resulting in lost earnings for the school. In addition to this, many schools usually use their Sports Hall to administer exams during exam periods, but the lack of light in some areas could be an issue for students. Yet even if a school does have the funds to hire scaffolding each time a bulb fails, thus avoiding low lighting, it is worth considering that whilst in place, the Sports Hall is likely to be out of use. This once again will not only have an effect on lessons, extracurricular activities, but could also result in a loss of earnings for the school if the hall isn’t available for rent during this time.

Traditional florescent lighting can also pose a higher health and safety risk compared to LED lighting too. Most bulbs are made of glass and therefore can be dangerous for staff whilst they’re replacing them, not to mention for students if a bulb was to break and any broken glass was accidentally left behind. It is also important to bear in mind that old style florescent bulbs can be easily dislodged from their light fitting if hit by a ball as well. But perhaps most importantly, the running hours of lights in a Sports Hall is usually much longer than other areas of the school, as they are used in the evenings and quite often at weekends too. With standard florescent lighting in place, such long hours costs the school a considerable amount of money, not to mention also having a significant impact on their energy usage. But the good news is schools no longer have to suffer!

LED lighting is incredibly more energy efficient than florescent lighting and will immediately help to reduce a school’s energy costs and usage once in place. LED lighting is more robust, providing a safer option for a school environment, yet it also provides a better quality of light too. Plus, as the lifespan of LED bulbs is significantly longer than older style lighting, bulbs will fail far less frequently, reducing the need for scaffolding.

If you’re sold on the idea of upgrading to LED lighting but you don’t have the budget available to fund the project, that doesn’t mean you can’t proceed. Here at Utility Rentals, we understand the budget restrictions schools face and therefore – together with Energys Group – we have created a unique rental package which enables schools and academies alike to upgrade to LED lighting with no upfront cost. Rental payments can be spread across a 3 or 5 year rental period and the annual rental payments will most likely cost less than your school is currently paying out on scaffolding each year! Plus, the rental will include installation and commissioning of your new lighting, the removal and disposal of your existing lighting in line with the WEEE directive, as well as a 5 year parts warranty as standard. So in the unlikely event that a bulb does fail, we’ll provide a replacement bulb for you at no extra cost. The best part is that in most cases the savings on electricity bills will outweigh the lease cost, leaving spare budget for other uses around school.
